REETTA
AHONEN
I
make very large woodcut prints - or very small, mini-prints. The
physicality of making woodcuts and the absoluteness of engraving
attracts me. On the other hand, the softening paint-like impression
comes into sight by overlapping many transparent layers of colour
and colour glides.
”The
freshness and use of an old traditional technique is refreshing. Her
work has a graphic quality which reaches beyond the usual andgives
her woodcuts an extra dimension. Her sense of colour supports
the character of the images.” (Statement
of the jury : Melek Mazici, Thom O´Connor,USA; Jöran
Österman,Sweden; Antti Salokannel,Finland; 4.mini-print
triennal 2001)
Normally
I use birch veneer as a printing block and print the proofs on
thick, 60-97g/m2 Japanese roll paper, handmade sheets or sometimes
very thin gampi as an extra layer. I use oil-based litography
colours. Exept the prints, also engraved effects are attractive.
I have made installations including both prints and blocks.
